Implementation of a mobile Geographic Information System (GIS) Solution to capture Viticulture and Winemaker assessments with custom backend integration.

Pernod Ricard Winemakers (PRW) is a premium wine division of Pernod Ricard, one of the largest alcoholic beverage companies in the world.

Each year PRW employees complete thousands of assessments on vineyards gauging the quality and product suitability. Across Australia, New Zealand and the US, PRW was conducting assessments using pen and paper with manual data entry into their database.

However manual data capture and entry can result in errors and open businesses up to great risk, while taking significantly more time.

The Approach

Knowing they needed a way to improve data quality and overall operational efficiencies, Pernod Ricard engaged Dialog (then Innodev) to implement a solution that will capture their assessments on a mobile device with user tracking, advanced calculations and the ability to capture photos/notes/evidence. This collected data would then need to be able to integrate with other third-party applications.

The Solution

Dialog provided a GIS solution that is simple to use, works on iOS or Android with full offline capability to capture assessment data. Multiple workshops were held in the Barossa with experienced Winemakers and Viticulturists with our UI/UX consultant. Serverless Azure Apps were used in addition to an on-premise gateway for backend integration with the GIS System.

The Outcome Benefits
Pernod Ricard experienced excellent uptake in the use of the application.. All defined users in Australia used the application, with a marked decrease in time needed to complete each assessment from the previous digital solution. Data capture improved, providing important insights into the vineyard blocks to impact decisions around quality, with the important GPS component vastly increasing our compliance and risk management capabilities. A high level of business engagement, due to the easy to use and well-designed UX, has seen a positive response from the end-users, with a transformational mindset taking shape which will influence further development to exploit the capabilities of the platform.
